The Census Bureau's 2020 to 2024 American Community Survey counts about 2,900 homes in the area. The original Dunn Loring townsite was platted in 1886, and Wikipedia calls it the earliest platted subdivision in Fairfax County. Much of the land between Lee Highway and Gallows Road was horse farms until development in the mid-1990s, which may help explain why about 18 percent of homes date from 2000 on. No Fairfax County Historic Overlay District carries the Dunn Loring name.

Storms: What Was Reported

On April 9, 2020, a tree fell into power lines on Cedar Lane, closing it near the 2400 block and downing several utility poles. On June 22, 2026, storms with straight-line winds knocked out power to more than 27,000 Fairfax County customers, with McLean, Dunn Loring and Burke seeing the heaviest concentration.
