Roofing in Burke, VA: house and townhouse roofs under Fairfax County rules

Burke sits entirely under Fairfax County, with no town hall in the way. What varies is the community: Burke Centre has its own Conservancy, and other streets may have an association. Reston Roof asks about both when you call.

What we do on Burke roofs

Burke's homes were mostly built in the 1970s and 1980s, so many may be on a second roof or later. That makes replacements and leak repairs the bulk of our calls here, along with chimney flashing, tarping and photos after a fallen tree, and occasional small jobs like a gazebo roof. Some commercial roofs too. Flat sections and metal are covered on the material pages further down.

Burke is county territory, not a town

Burke is an unincorporated section of Fairfax County, traditionally the area served by the Burke post office, and it includes two separate census places: Burke, with about 42,000 residents in 2020, and Burke Centre, with about 17,500. There is no town government. Fairfax County Land Development Services is the building official, and county zoning applies.

Fairfax County's published list puts a plain shingle replacement outside permit territory, while repairs, chimney work and solar panels are inside it. One Burke home in three is a townhouse, and fire-rated decking under a townhouse roof can change the answer. We neither promise that nothing needs a permit nor claim to pull one for every job, and we ask the county about your exact scope first. More in the Fairfax County permits guide.

Which Burke you mean

  • The Burke place, the larger census place, covers the area around Burke Lake Road, Burke Road and Rolling Road, with Kings Park to the northeast and West Springfield to the east.
  • Burke Centre is a separate census place west of Burke and a 1,700-acre planned community with its own Conservancy. Check with the Conservancy or your association before exterior work.
  • Burke Lake Park has a Fairfax Station mailing address and is not part of any census place.
  • Many homes people call Burke carry a Springfield, Fairfax Station or Fairfax mailing line. All are unincorporated Fairfax County for permit purposes.

The 1950s fight over a second airport shaped the area: land bought for that plan later became Burke Lake Park and Burke Centre. The old Silas Burke House on Burke Lake Road and Mulberry Hill are history, not roofing rules, because no county historic overlay district carries a Burke name.

What Burke roofs look like on paper

The Census Bureau's 2020 to 2024 survey counts 13,878 homes in the Burke place: 64.7 percent detached, 33.5 percent attached, and only 1.0 percent in buildings of five or more units. About 89.5 percent are owner-occupied. The median home was built in 1979, and 81.8 percent date from the 1970s and 1980s. Only 8.5 percent pre-date 1970.

Burke is a house and townhouse market, which is why pitched roofs come first on this page and flat sections second. Homes of that age may be on a second or later roof, and the layers on the roof tell more than the date on the deed.

The June 2026 microburst and storm weather

On June 22, 2026 a microburst struck near Lake Royal, about a mile northwest of Burke. The National Weather Service estimated peak winds of 90 mph, with many trees snapped or uprooted and some falling on homes and power lines. Reports mention some damage to roofs, and Annandale Today counted nine homes significantly damaged. Guinea Road was closed for a stretch after the storm.

Earlier, the June 29, 2012 derecho put a 71 mph gust on record at Dulles Airport. After any storm, our emergency repair guide and the Fairfax County claims guide explain what to photograph and what to do first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a Burke town office I should call about a roof permit?

No. Burke is an unincorporated part of Fairfax County, so there is no town government and no town permit step. Fairfax County Land Development Services is the building official. The county lists replacing roof shingles as work that does not need a building permit, but roof repairs, chimney repairs and solar panels are permit work. We check your exact scope with the county before we start.

My mailing address says Fairfax Station or Springfield but everyone calls the area Burke. Does that matter?

For permits, no. Those addresses are also unincorporated Fairfax County, and the same county office handles them. Burke Lake Park, for example, has a Fairfax Station address and sits outside every census place. We look up your parcel before planning anything, so a different mailing line does not change who approves the work.

I live in the Burke Centre planned community. Do I deal with the county, the association, or both?

Both, for different things. The county is the building official, and your community may also review exterior changes. Ask the Conservancy or your own association before any exterior work, in writing if you can, and send us what they say so the scope matches.

How did the June 2026 microburst affect roofs in Burke?

The National Weather Service estimated peak winds of 90 mph around Lake Royal, a mile northwest of Burke. Trees came down on homes, cars and power lines, and local reports mention some roof damage. If a limb or tree hit your roof, we inspect, tarp if needed and document damage with photos for your claim.

A tree limb is on my Burke roof right now. What should I do before anyone arrives?

Stay off the roof and keep people and pets out of the room below. Move valuables, catch drips with a bucket and photograph the damage from the ground. If water is coming in, call (571) 453-6515 and we can arrange a tarp and plan the permanent repair. Do not try to drag the limb off yourself, because a wet surface and a damaged deck are dangerous.
